Mathematical Resources from Internet

Indeed, much of
Newton’s intellectual development can be attributed to this tension between
rationalism and mysticism. At the Stourbridge Fair in 1663, at age twenty, he
purchased a book on astrology, “out of a curiosity to see what there was in
it.” He read it until he came to an illustration which he could not understand,
because he was of ignorant of trigonometry. So he purchased a book on
trigonometry but soon found himself unable to follow the geometrical arguments.
So he found a copy of Euclid’s ‘Elements of Geometry’, and began to read. Two
years later he invented the differential calculus.

An excerpt from ‘Cosmos’ by Carl Sagan
We take up
something-we know it is finite; but as soon as we begin to analyze it, it leads
us beyond our reason, and we never find an end to all its qualities, its
possibilities, its power, its relations. It has become infinite.

"Good, he did not have enough imagination to
become a mathematician".
- David Hilbert's response upon hearing that one of
his students had dropped out to study poetry.
I have compiled a list of websites
which may be used as resources for Mathematics. The compilation is not
exhaustive for the obvious reason that Internet is full of thousands of such
websites. Besides, I haven’t tried to categorize those websites. Some of the
websites listed below also contain resources for topics not related to
Mathematics, though you may find them useful anyway.
While
compiling, I realized some of the links don’t exist anymore and some links lead
to irrelevant stuff. I posted them anyway. May be they aren’t working
temporarily. As for the level of the content, some links provide content which
may be suitable for the kids and other may provide contents which are suitable
for more advanced and research level pursuits.
One
more thing, many of listed websites offer ‘Free to Download’ study materials.
In fact, depending on your efforts, there are hundreds (thousands, may be) of
e-books which can be downloaded legally while some other may provide links to
download materials which may not be legal. For example, www.4shared.com offers hundreds of high quality
mathematics books (and other stuff as well) to download but I guess this is
illegal. Similarly, there are numerous torrent files available on internet for
downloading the books. The point is: This is up to you to decide.
A Note: You are encouraged to print the
material whenever it is permitted by their respective authors and distribute among
those who strives to learn mathematics. And one more thing: Use wasted one
sided printed papers which you usually throw in the dustbin.
If
you like this effort, do let other know. Post comments. Share this post on
Facebook or Twitter. Who knows there may
be another Ramanujan among us!
P.S. – Though I started writing this
blog for compiling mathematics websites, it occurred to me to list down some
other interesting websites as well which have nothing to do with mathematics.
So, I listed down those websites/links as well.
P.S. ^ 2 – As George Patton said, “A good
plan, if violently executed, is better than the best plan next week.” I wrote
this blog over one weekend (Saturdays are working days, sadly). Many mistakes
are bound to happen. I didn’t do any formatting or organizing and hence there
is no particular order of listing. I think I may be forgiven.
This
blog may serve as a gateway for Mathematical Universe.

other resourceful links.
